live in berlin aug 4
i’m in berlin right now. spent the day sightseeing, although that is the worst word for it.
its a city so full of history. i’m staying in mitte, right near the wall in east berlin. 2 min walk from here is an old guard tower. i have been so overwhelmed with history. its been a very emotional day. i can see why the war is still so alive in the collective memory of the german people.
but, on another note, i too will be contributing a bit to the culture of berlin. i make my laptop debut on aug 4 as part of the daskleinefieldrecordings festival, mangling sound i recorded on my latest trip to kolkata and also plundering my own archives of music and phonographic sound in a live improvised set.
deets:
@ wendel (one of the best places in berlin for organic beer!), Schlesische Strasse 42, U-bahn Schlesisches Tor, Kreuzberg (of course).
21:30 doors, 5 Euro.
peace.
wow. i think i am really liking this whole video thing.

new CD for dance classes and dancin’
i’ve been working on creating some trax for modern dance classes, as i seem to be getting a lot of requests for this when i accompany dance classes in the school system.
the root grooves of each track are taken from a recording of a class i played for toronto dance theatre company early this year, recorded by the inimitable phil strong. each track uses these grooves to construct, ah, journeys in sound, spiced with the digital world of electronics. if i may indulge in marketspeak briefly, the CD is an organic combination of electronic beats, textures and acoustic percussion.
because each track is based on a groove directly taken from a dance class, teachers will be able to find something for each excercise—warmups, tendus, ronde de jambes, across the floor, etc. non-teachers will also enjoy the cool grooves—perfect for a summer day, riding your bike (riding your bike not recommended with headphones!!!!), or getting places on the subway.
working on a DECEMBER release. keep listening.
nuit blanche
wow. (i’m saying that a lot these days. guess that’s a good sign). i just found that my submission to the open call to toronto’s nuit blanche (which i have to change the title of), has made the cut! i have been chosen as one of the 5 commissions per zone. what a great thing, mostly because nuit blanche is one of the most amazing things that toronto does. last year’s event was totally magical. i am so pleased to be chosen. wow. (i’m saying that a lot these days).
more details to follow once i get some sleep.
and

busy
funny. you spend time wishing for days that are full of work (good work i mean) and then when they come you can’t believe how difficult it is to stay mindful through it, to make good work that has depth.
but i’m not going to complain here. leela’s CD won a juno! as per my last post, i’m going to pretend that i won a juno too. congratulations leela….
compiling projects for calls to artists (they never seem to stop coming, and i never seem to stop sending them out, and they never seem to stop politely declining!), waiting on hearing a few competition results, etc. the artist’s way, i suppose.
out.
new project confirmed!
i just received word that my application for funding the first incarnation of the 24 hour project, he sat on the glittering precipice, was successful. this version will use the photos and audio i recorded over a 24 hour period in my father’s room a month before he passed away. an auspicious beginning to my shift in focus to new media art projects. thanks to the ontario arts council for granting funds.
on board are yesim tosuner, who will help me to compile the video and design the website, and the incredible david travers-smith who has agreed to help me with the more delicate end of audio matters.
in other good timing news, previews start tonight for theatre gargantua’s ambitious show e-dentity, presented by the mirvishes at the beautiful royal alexandra theatre. the show runs to may 20 and i will playing most of them—from home. i will be monitoring the show via online chat, and playing beats in a number of scenes and streaming the audio to them to play in the theatre. i always wanted to do a theatre show, and this is a good way to do it! you can get more info and tix at the link above. its quite a spectacle, and worth seeing. and hearing.
as an aside, the internet business end of this show was a huge hassle. how come stuff never works like the marketing guys say when they sell you the stuff?
finally, i have been listening to the soundtracks to salaam-e-ishq and kabhi alvida naa kehna. they are awesome!!!!!!! i can’t wait to get my hands on some more bollywood stuff, i have to say.
well. over and out.
