Debashis Sinha’s soundscape, as naked as the set, sneaks up behind you…and the questions this sound design inspires–where does the theatre end and the real world begin?–are far, far more important to this story than I can express in this review.
Megan Mooney, Mooney on Theatre
Sinha has been named as one of the finalists for the 2024 Siminovitch Prize, Canada’s premiere prize celebrating excellence in the theatre arts. He has won 2 Dora awards for Best Original Music and Sound Design and has garnered multiple nominations for the same award over the years. In 2022 he won a Dora for Outstanding Achievement in Design (Opera Category) for the Tapestry Opera production of R.U.R A Torrent of Light (composed by Nicole Lizée with a libretto by Nic Billon). This show also won Best Production from the North American Critics Association. Sinha and the design team for the Soulpepper production of Eurydice were also recipients of the Toronto Theatre Critic’s Award for Best Design (2016).
For his work in media and media art, Sinha was named the 2023 Laureate for the Ontario Arts Council’s Louis Applebaum Composers Award in Media.
…tribute must also be paid to the music, which gives even small moments a cinematic feel. There’s a tension and fragility to the sound that’s subtle, but affecting.
